Leopard gets BSOD

leopard bsod

Mac users who are getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death while trying to update to the latest and greatest version of OS X. Lot of users in Apple Support forum getting a persistent blue screen that forces them to abort their installation of Leopard. It’s still not clear what’s causing this problem. Seems at least some of the the people experiencing problems had a third-party developer application called Application Enhancer installed. Some also had external disks or other peripherals attached when they pulled the trigger on the Leopard install. The OS went on sale on Friday all over the world. Many users later reported they were able to successfully install. more

Asus Eee PC 701 review by Laptopmag

asus eee pc review

This is excellent review of Asus Eee PC 701 by Laptopmag. Reviewer gives this laptop 4 out of 5 stars and compares high-end Eee model with a budget laptop for the same price of $399. In conclusion the reviewer is asking only for USB cellular data card drivers and better UI. This looks like a very decent, inexpensive ultra light Linux machine. I’m sure lot of people will use this as an out-of-the-office computer. You can’t get a comparable solid state laptop for a comparable price. The lack of an HDD is the big appeal here. They use more battery and break easily. There is also the added weight and requisite real estate. I hope the Linux community is going to be all over this thing. The only thing that concerns me is a rumor that the OS, while lightweight, takes up almost a gig of storage, leaving only another gig on the low end model. A lightweight Linux OS should take no more than 250-300 MB. Also, having a pre-configured Linux OS that already knows how to deal with the on board hardware is another argument for getting one of these as opposed to a cheap laptop with an optical drive, HDD etc, and trying to get Linux to play nice with Wi-Fi. more

Nikon D3 preview from Denmark

nikon d3 preview from denmark

This is Nikon D3 preview by Casper Tybjerg from Denmark. Sample image was taken with Nikon D3 (FX), 70-200 mm VR, f/2.8, 1/500, ISO 200. Casper Tybjerg is impressed with D3 viewfinder and Multi-CAM3500FX with 51 area focus points. They will automatically light up or get darker depending on the background. The result: they are not in your way when you don’t need them. This 51 area focus points will make creativity and precise focusing easier. The Multi-CAM3500FX is really impressive and it focuses fast and precise even in bad conditions (low light or contrast). D3 is a huge step forward for digital photography. Nikon has chosen to keep the 12 megapixel resolution. The result as a great camera and a creative freedom like never before. If you belong to the generation of photographers who started making exposures before digital technology, the D3 will be good tool for you. D3 will give you exactly the same experience as the old Nikon F5, but the creative potentials of D3 reaches new heights. more

Canon EOS 40D Hightly Recommended by Dpreview

canon eos 40d review

Everybody was waiting for Canon EOS 40D reviews from Dpreview. As always this is excellent review. Final conclusion for this camera is highly recommended. This review has in-depth coverage of this camera, comparison and samples. There is no comparison between Nikon D300 and canon EOS 40D. According to the review - From an image quality point of view the combination of the Canon CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor means equally detailed images at all sensitivities (except maybe ISO 3200), low noise and a complete lack of unnatural artifacts. The new high ISO speed noise reduction option has no effect on luminance detail but removes any lingering chroma noise, giving high ISO images a more film-like grain; something Nikon has been doing for some time. We would be interested to see Canon using a less strong anti-alias filter which would mean that JPEG images would require less sharpening and would be naturally ‘crisper’ straight off the sensor, but it’s a minor point and would really only be seen by ‘pixel peepers’. One surprise came from our testing of the cameras dynamic range; it delivered a consistently higher range than both the competition and its predecessor. The majority of this improvement, however, was in the shadow range, a function we presume of the new 14-bit processing pipeline. More

Nikon D3 Sample from Sabi Sand, South Africa

nikon d3 south africa

This Nikon D3 sample series is from Sabi Sand, South Africa by Hedrus, founder of Outdoorphoto. Photographs were taken with Nikon D3 and Nikon 200-400 mm lens. Nikon SA made this early model available to the photographer. This is pre-production Nikon D3 model. Production Nikon D3 is expected towards end November 2007. According to the photographer - I have just returned from a quick 3 day trip to Sabi Sand. The weather was lousy and overcast, the sightings was not too spectacular and action was a bit low this weekend. I did however thought I will make use of the opportunity to look at few things on the new Nikon D3 and ISO performance was one of them. Here are a few shots, Converted straight on demo version of the new Nikon View NX. No adjustments were made. Not exposure compensations, no noise removal, no saturation, nothing, straight conversions to JPG. Well let me tell you something. It was the first time in my life that I shot a photo at ISO 25600. Yes you have seen it correctly. The shot with the lion stretching was done in near darkness. A photo I would never have taken. I do show some noise but, I think it’s a perfect shot to show what can be achieved. Journalist and sport shooters who have to get the shot will be over the moon. more

Vincent Versace Nikon D300 Sample Gallery

vincent-versace-nikon-d300
Vincent Versace has posted a gallery of images he recently shot in Vietnam with the Nikon D300. The color images were captured with a Nikon D300 and all images were post processed in Capture NX with minimal to no post processing in CS3. The lens used were a Nikon 12-24 mm VR zoom and a nikon 70-200 mm VR zoom. All images were recorded on 8 GB 300x UDMA lexar flash card. The colors look very nice, muted, yet extremely vibrant. It’s somewhat surprising to find all the colors closely mimicking those from slide films.

Nikon D3 from Photo Show in Canada

nikon d3 iso 3200 canada

This Nikon D3 sample was taken by dpreview forum user Sebz with Nikon 14-24mm lens. According to Nikon rep that camera didn’t have final firmware loaded. According to the photographer, auto focus points are amazing, but it is hard to say how focusing will work on longer lenses, on 14-24 was super fast. Also high iso images from Nikon D3 was better than Canon 1Ds Mark III ISO 3200, I have few shoots for comparison, on Canon snaps we can see little red and blue spots. You can download NEF images from mannyphoto.
