[Nikon D300 ISO: 200 Exposure: 1/160 sec Aperture: f/5.0 Focal Length: 70mm]
These Images shot with Nikon D3 and Nikon D300 DSLRs during a Nikon UK NPS member’s event in Glasgow, Scotland. Photographer shot very basic “off-the-cuff” test images with both bodies using the following
AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8 (D3)
AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 DX (D300)
AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 (D3 and D300)
AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5 - 5.6 DX (D3 to test DX mode)
AF-D 28mm f/1.4 (D3)
AF-D 50mm f/1.4 (D3)
AF-D 85mm f/1.4 (D3)
AF-S 200mm f/2 (D3)
AF-S 400mm f/2.8 VR (also with TC-14E-II) (D3)
AF-S 500mm f/4 VR (D3)
AF-S 600mm f/4 VR (D3)
AF-S 200-400mm f/4 VR (D3)
AF-S 105mm f/2.8 Macro VR (D300 with R1C1 CLS kit attached)

[Nikon D3 ISO: 200 Exposure: 1/320 sec Aperture: f/2.8 Focal Length: 14mm]
Most of the images were shot with NR set to OFF; wide open and a mixture of high and low ISO values.
Almost all (95%) of the shooting was done hand-held so there are camera-shake/blur issues at the lower shutter speeds. Also, these were closed door tests which took place inside a hotel room under low artificial light and will accordingly be a ‘torture test’ for High ISO performance. Factor also that the lights in the room were mixed: tungsten here, fluorescent there, some halogens dotted around too and - when the cloud cover outside started to clear - you got daylight in the mix too. Auto WB is going to have a tough time getting that right on any camera. According to the photographer, he was extremely impressed with both cameras and the new lenses. There’s an improvement in the way NR is applied to the luminosity channel that is, the end result from the D300 looks more “realistic” and less smeared vs. the D200. Interesting observation is that Nikon D200 had noise but only luminance part of it, now the D300 shares chroma noise with Canon.
The new cameras, will not help anyone take better photos, in fact as technology advances, it will probably make getting good photos more difficult. The noise does not magically disappear, you need to know how to shoot in the conditions given you, and then there will be less noise.
