Nikon D300 sample and Noise

This Nikon D300 sample photograph was taken by dpreview forum user Olga at Paris Expo. Nikon actually allowed taking the picture out of the camera. This is really good news. Everybody was complaining that there is no good Nikon D300 sample. This will answer lot of question. According to the photographer - I was impressed by the camera build. Even if I don’t like big bodies, this one felt well in my hands. It’s a very fast and very precise machine. Focusing is great; color rendition is according with the latest digital trends - vivid colors. Live View works great too. 8 f/sec. with the grip puts this machine in its own class under $2000 sports equipment. It really has no weak points except noise at high ISO. I can’t tell that I was impressed but it’s acceptable. Here are two examples. Please note, there are no test charts and I had no chance in the world to do a better test. So, it’s all preliminary.

Compared to D200 images look very good when coupled with the other advances of this camera. At least one stop advantage high ISO, maybe more considering all these sample photos are by people quickly picking up and shooting with little, if any, actual working knowledge of this particular body. Imagine if you had a chance to set up correctly with some of your most trusted quality glass instead of one like the very mediocre 18-200VR the end result would be better. The speed and accuracy of the CAM3500 AF seems to be a good option for buying this camera. Dynamic Range seems to be improved. Demand for Nikon D300 is already fever pitched and some will wait longer than others to be able to call this camera their own. I think if you don’t go in looking for D3 or MKIII like performance, you won’t be disappointed with Nikon D300. It would be foolish to release a $1800 body that does the same thing a $5000 body does.
[update 10/05/2007 10:00 PM CST] According to Dpreview forum user Jola013 who tested Nikon D300 and Canon EOS 40D :
Nikon D300 high ISO noise is one stop better than Nikon D200.
Nikon D300 high ISO noise is one stop worse than Canon EOS 40D.
He posted following Nikon D300 sample to back his claim and he is right:

So the conclusion is, noise on 10/12MP cropped sensors will never get much better than this, unless technology changes drastically. We’re seeing things topping off now; even Canon seems to have stopped bettering their results. Those interested in high ISO performance will have to go FF, for now.
